Objectives of the GENDIGIT Research Group/Objetivos del grupo GENDIGIT

The strong development of digital or cyber-genres and so-called computer-mediated communication is an undeniable recent development. Its development at all levels, through the inclusion of texts and/or multimedia elements, has been shaping and transforming and enriching discourse. Here we must understand both the mechanisms of textual production and those of reception, given that the user, receiver or reader, who played a more passive role in traditional genres, actively participates in cyber-genres, becoming an agent in a medium, that of the Internet, which is undergoing constant change. In short, the genres and modes, both collective (blogs, web pages, forums, social networks) and individual (narrative blogs, e-mails), have opened up a universe of possibilities and characteristics thanks to the incorporation of electronic media. We are therefore witnessing the genesis of new genres and modes with discursive proposals that need to be known and described in detail in order to understand their impact on speech communities and sociolinguistic environments. Our research group aims to analyze the multiplicity of linguistic aspects, pragmatic and discursive strategies, phraseology, vocabulary, multimodal features, etc., in five languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian. To this end, databases containing samples of original versions and translations of cybergenders have been created where we can examine the construction of these texts and their behavior from the perspective of contrast and interaction. We hope that all this will allow us to carry out more precise and detailed research. Thanks to these databases, in the various analyses we hope to be able to more accurately characterize the digital genres, their discourses, the lexicon or phraseology, the socio-pragmatic aspects, or the semiotics (multimodal). We are also interested in the interactive role of the receivers of all this vast digital production, since we know that the audience plays a decisive active role, for example, through the opinions expressed in social networks, or in various discussion forums, influencing more clearly the effective transformation of contents and messages. We prioritize the use of corpus tools since they enrich linguistic description, and go beyond simple manual analysis, based on intuition, particularly when it comes to empirically analyzing large samples of data. The introduction of corpus tools methodologically links quantitative and qualitative analysis. The aim is to compile and update linguistic databases containing highly representative data of the so-called cybergenders. The implementation of these large databases and the commitment to appropriate methodologies based on corpus provide systematization and soundness to our research, not only based on theory, but mainly on a strong empirical component to observe the real use, hoping that they can serve as a model for further work on e-genres and modes.
